EED (Energy Efficiency Directive)
The EED is the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive. Member states implement it in national law, for example as requirements for energy management systems or regular energy audits.
EED stands for the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive. The directive aims to promote energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Each member state implements it in national law, so the specific requirements for companies differ from country to country, typically as requirements for energy management or regular energy audits.
Example: Denmark
In Denmark, the requirements depend on a company’s average annual energy consumption over the previous three years:
- Above 85 TJ: the company must introduce and maintain a certified energy management system, such as ISO 50001, by 1 August 2026.
- Between 10 and 85 TJ: there is no requirement for energy management, but the company had to carry out an energy audit by 1 August 2025 and at least every four years after that, plus a climate audit by 1 August 2026 and at least every four years after that.
Companies in the 10 to 85 TJ range can choose to introduce an energy management system as an alternative to the mandatory audits. The Danish Energy Agency administers and enforces the requirements.
Example: Germany
Germany implements the EED through the Energy Efficiency Act (Energieeffizienzgesetz, EnEfG):
- Above 7.5 GWh per year: companies must introduce an energy or environmental management system in line with DIN EN ISO 50001.
- Between 2.5 and 7.5 GWh: companies must carry out an energy audit every four years (in line with DIN EN 16247-1 or equivalent) and draw up an implementation plan for economically viable efficiency measures.
Public bodies with a total energy consumption of 3 GWh or more must also introduce an energy or environmental management system.
