Benchmarking

Benchmarking means comparing energy performance over time, across your own sites or against other buildings with the same use, so you can see where action pays off most.

Benchmarking means comparing your energy performance with a relevant point of reference. That can be your own consumption over time, consumption across your own buildings and sites, or other buildings with the same use.

Why benchmark?

For organisations with many buildings, it is hard to know where to start. Benchmarking shows which sites stand out, so you can prioritise the measures with the greatest effect on both energy consumption and carbon footprint. It also gives you a data-driven starting point for setting realistic targets and following up on them.

Three types of benchmarking

  • Over time: Compare a building’s consumption with previous periods, ideally weather-adjusted with degree day correction.
  • Across your own sites: Compare, for example, shops, schools or offices with each other using key figures.
  • Against buildings with the same use: Compare your buildings with other buildings of the same type.

Benchmarking in Enity EMS

In Enity EMS you can compare consumption between sites and analyse consumption using custom key figures. The building benchmark analysis compares your buildings with other buildings with the same use in Enity’s EMS database. Coop, for example, uses Enity EMS to benchmark energy performance across shops, distribution centres and offices. Read the Coop case here.
