Coop

Coop operates Denmark’s largest energy management system in retail

Coop has implemented the ISO 50001 standard for energy management across all its stores, distribution centers, and office facilities, making it Denmark’s largest energy management system within the retail sector. This certification commits Coop to continuously improving its energy efficiency and reducing overall energy consumption.

As part of this effort, Coop has carried out several initiatives, including:

  • Replacing oil and gas boilers with heat pumps
  • Upgrading first-generation LED lighting
  • Lowering indoor temperatures to 19°C in warehouses, service offices, and stores
  • Installing solar panels on stores and distribution centers
  • Implementing systems for recovering surplus heat in stores and distribution centers

These initiatives resulted in an energy reduction of 26 million kWh in 2024

  • Coop’s energy management system has received international recognition, earning the “Award of Excellence in Energy Management” for its effective use of the ISO 50001 standard.
  • In addition, Coop has developed a climate action plan approved by Science Based Targets (SBTi), ensuring alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
  • Through these initiatives, Coop demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency across its entire operations.

Coop uses Enity EMS as a central part of its energy management and optimization strategy Enity EMS provides Coop with a comprehensive overview of energy and water consumption as well as CO₂ emissions across all stores, distribution centers, and office facilities.

Key Enity EMS features essential to Coop

With Enity EMS, Coop can proactively manage energy consumption, identify saving opportunities, and ensure continuous improvement in energy performance. This supports their overall goal of reducing energy use and minimizing environmental impact.

It’s the combination of automated data collection, Enity platform tools (particularly KPIs, regression analyses, and accurate master data), custom Excel reports with EnPIs and EnBs, and our supporting services that empower Coop’s energy management.

Automated data collection:
The system automatically gathers data from thousands of energy meters, ensuring that Coop always has accurate and up-to-date data for analysis and reporting.

Monitoring and analysis:
Enity EMS provides dashboards offering an instant overview of total energy consumption. Coop can monitor usage patterns, identify potential energy waste, and benchmark performance across locations.

Reporting and compliance:
The system supports reporting of energy data, helping Coop meet the requirements of their ISO 50001 certification.

Support services in extension of Enity EMS

In addition to the platform, Enity provides several support services that are particularly valuable for ISO 50001 compliance:

  • High data quality (through metering service or full service)
  • Notifications of abnormal energy consumption (full service)
  • When deviations occur, the affected store is informed, and a case is logged
  • Follow-up ensures that consumption is corrected
  • All cases are logged directly in Coop’s own Dalux system, allowing full transparency across the organization
  • Assistance during ISO 50001 audits
