Traceability and snapshots
Traceability means you can show where climate data comes from, how it was calculated and which emission factors were used. Snapshots save the calculations as they were at a specific point in time.
Traceability means your figures can be verified. Carbon accounting must be documented in the same way as financial accounts. A snapshot is a saved record of calculations, method and data basis at a specific point in time.
What do you need to be able to show?

- How the calculations were made
- Which emission factors were used
- When the calculation was made
Why are snapshots necessary?
Emission factors are updated regularly, and historical data can change. If you do not save the method and data basis for each reporting period, you risk no longer being able to reproduce figures you reported earlier. This is essential when dealing with auditors and when comparing over time.
Traceability and CSRD
Under CSRD, climate data must be traceable and documented, calculation methods must be consistent, and emission factors and data sources must be explainable and auditable. Whether or not your company is directly covered, the market is moving towards higher documentation requirements.
