Data validation checks that meter data is complete and correct, so errors, gaps and unrealistic values are caught before they end up in analyses and reports.
Data validation is the ongoing check that meter data is complete, correct and realistic. The goal is to catch errors before they end up in analyses, carbon accounts and reports.
Common data errors
- Missing data, for example when a meter loses its connection
- Unrealistic spikes or zero values
- Wrong scaling or units
- Meters that have been replaced or linked to the wrong building
- The same consumption recorded twice
Why does data validation matter?
Decisions, savings and reporting are only as good as the data behind them. Requirements from CSRD and ISO 50001 also mean that data must be documented and auditable. An error in meter data can lead to wrong KPIs, hide waste or cause errors in your carbon accounts.
How data validation works
An EMS can automatically compare new data with history, expected consumption and other meters and flag deviations. Some errors can be corrected automatically, while others need an energy advisor or operations team to investigate.
