PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act)
PDCA is a structured, cyclical method for continuous improvement and the core of energy management under ISO 50001: plan, do, check and act.
PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act. It is a structured, cyclical approach to continuous improvement, widely used in quality management, business optimisation and energy management, for example under ISO 50001.
The four steps of PDCA
- Plan: Set the energy policy and commitments, carry out an energy review, define energy objectives and action plans, and identify relevant legal requirements and standards.
- Do: Implement the planned measures, provide resources, skills and training, establish operational control, and document energy data.
- Check: Monitor and measure energy performance through KPIs, carry out internal audits, analyse data for deviations, and evaluate the effect of completed improvements.
- Act: Take corrective action, update the policy, objectives and action plans as needed, and make sure management is involved in continuous improvement.
Why use PDCA in energy management?
The method ensures that energy decisions are based on analysed data rather than assumptions. It makes it easier to adapt to new requirements and technologies, supports the documentation needed for ISO 50001 certification, and reduces energy waste and operating costs. It also involves employees and builds an energy-conscious culture.
How Enity EMS supports PDCA
Enity EMS supports the whole cycle: automatic data collection and energy monitoring, analysis of energy performance, follow-up on energy objectives and action plans, and reports and documentation for audits. Our energy advisers also help with data validation, action plans and audits.
