A deviation is an abnormal fluctuation in energy consumption or metering data, for example consumption that suddenly rises or a meter that stops delivering data. Alerts and notifications make sure the right people are informed, so the deviation can be investigated and fixed.

Why do deviations matter?

Deviations can be a sign of energy waste, faults in operations and technical installations, or errors in metering data. The sooner they are spotted, the less they cost. For organisations with many buildings it is not realistic to watch every curve manually, which is why automatic monitoring with alerts is essential.

Two types of deviation

• Deviations in consumption: consumption differs from what is expected, for example because an installation is running outside normal operation.
• Deviations in data: meter faults or missing data, which are caught through data validation so that analyses and reports are based on correct figures.

How it works in practice at Coop

Coop uses Enity EMS in Denmark’s largest energy management system in retail. When there is a deviation in energy consumption, the store is notified and the case is logged directly in Coop’s own Dalux system, so everyone at Coop can follow it. Alerts in Enity EMS
